||OMB Updates Their Guidance on U.S. Government Travel
On 25 November 2016, the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released a revised
memorandum that improves U.S. government conference travel policy. The memo mentions the significant savings in conference spending since the original policy was implemented in 2012, and speaks to the importance of science and technology conferences to agency missions. Under the revised policy, OMB calls on agencies to develop and implement travel and conference guidance tailored to their mission needs and risks. More specifically, it delegates authority for conference attendance to an “appropriate official” for approval and allows for preapproval of “known recurring conferences, especially at non-government sponsored conferences.” The guidance offered in the revised memo “does not apply to Federal attendance at non-Federal conferences.”
AIAA has been part of a large coalition of other scientific and engineering societies actively advocating for the easing of travel restrictions for federal employees attending science and technology conferences.
